Rotterdam Netherlands - Europe's Largest Port

Rotterdam Netherlands - Europe's Largest Port

With a 2007 population of 584,000, Rotterdam sits on the great delta around the river Rhine, and may be the biggest port in Europe. It is the Netherlands' second largest city next to the more well-known Amsterdam, but Rotterdam certainly has its very own unique appeal that makes it a great tourist destination. In fact, 4 million people per year go to  Rotterdam .

The community center was mostly destroyed straightaway at the outset of World War II, and the community was rebuilt with a look toward the world. Thus Rotterdam is a modern city when compared with several of its European contemporaries, and features much stunning modern architecture. The city is famous for its impressive skyline. It has the tallest residential building in the Netherlands from 524 feet, and also the 520 feet tallest company building, called Delftse Poort. Another prominent aspect of the skyline is the 610 feet Euromast Tower, that is an extremely popular tourist attraction.

Rotterdam has worked hard to create itself an appealing destination, and was compensated for that efforts with the European Capital of Culture designation within 2001. The community is rich in museums of that there are numerous, like the Maritime Museum, which has over the half million exhibits. There's much good shopping also, with the Linjbaan pedestrian shopping area standing out because of its several good specialty restaurants. Also make sure you go to the Oceanium, that is a fantastic sea aquarium that features an especially scary shark tunnel.

Don't miss out on the famous Walk of Fame, that commemorates 200 overseas celebrities in deep concrete along "Star Boulevard". The port is particularly well lit and impressive at bedtime -- before you leave Rotterdam, you have to take a cruise on the colorful "pancake boat", in which you are able to cruise along the nighttime cityscape and port while ingesting all of the pancakes you are able to pack away.
